2016 was a good year: online shopping in China grew with 26%

China’s economy slowing down? Not according to the statistics. The online retail sales in China reached 5.16 trillion Yuan (€704 million) in 2016, representing a growth of 26.2% according to a report of China’s National Bureau of Statistics. The total online spending accounted for about 16% of the total retail purchases in 2016.
The government agency reported that Chinese consumers bought more premium products, including sporting goods and food products. Some industries grew faster than expected, the online sales of food went up with 28.5% and clothing grew with 18.1% compared to 2015.

These numbers show that it is still a healthy consumer economy, despite the slowdown in recent years. What’s more, according to Alibaba the number of Chinese consumers who purchased overseas products on Tmall Global doubled. And in September, Amazon China (launched in 2014) announced to have processed their 10 million order on their cross-border shopping area.
